In the centre of Ghent, on a formal industrial site in the quiet Prinsenhof neighbourhood, the construction of De Motte reconversion project has started. This project comprises a combination of family houses, studios and flats, with a total capacity of 27 residential units, each with its own outdoor space. Historically relevant and well-located buildings will be qualitatively renovated, while dilapidated storages spaces and annexes will be demolished to provide much-needed light and air to the site. The project was developed in close consultation with the neighbourhood to achieve a supported, fine-grained urbanity.
Because of the existing cultural heritage, we deliberately chose a harmonious approach with the historic environment on the street side and with the detailed industrial architecture of the old sawmill building in the inner area. Parking is provided underground, leaving this inner area which will be partially depaved, free for communal use and greenery, enabling urban community life in a pleasant and accessible way. All units are strategically positioned around and overlook this central communal green area. The new buildings blend seamlessly with the historical structures and emphasise them by being modest themselves. Characterised by simplicity, the new architecture is noble and in harmony with the scale of the city.
