North-South Limburg Complex project #2

For the North-South Limburg Complex Project (connecting Hasselt and Eindhoven), NU architectuuratelier is designing various infrastructural elements including tunnel mouths, wall typologie, and bridges. To promote sustainable mobility, we develop safe and high-quality infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.
We design two types of bicycle bridges, both focusing on providing a qualitative cycling experience and enhancing the relationship with and blending in the surroundings. We opt for wood as construction material not just for its tactile warmth and sustainability but for promoting and developing wood as a qualitative and versatile building material, as well as its capacity to store carbon. By doing this we wish to contribute to reducing carbon in the air, minimalising the carbon footprint of the construction sector and support the transition to a more sustainable built environment.
Depending on the span and the context, we provide the load-bearing structure either in the bridge deck itself or in the solid railing as a load-bearing beam, offering different experiences for cyclists and pedestrians, from an light and open landscape view to a more enclosed feel, shielding them from busy traffic below.
