North-South Limburg Complex project #4

To give the North-South Limburg Complex project (linking Hasselt and Eindhoven) a distinctive identity, NU architectuuratelier in close collab with Maat Ontwerpers developed a family of spatial tools. We’ve designed various types of structural elements adaptable to varied contexts, all within a cohesive design language. This ensures that all objects and structures along the North-South connection will be unified into one coherent and recognizable project.
Pillars, for instance, integral to bridge construction play a significant role in expressing the bridges’ character. The pillar-design focuses on three types: the slender steel column, which minimizes visual and physical impact on nature, making it suitable for delicate natural areas; the concrete ellipse, combining elegance with structural advantages; and the concrete vault, possessing both structural strength and spatial defining qualities, shaping the spatial experience between different speeds (cyclists versus heavy traffic).
