The measure of a good life is a life we can all recognize and relate to. It revolves around the simple, essential values that are meaningful to every human being: comfort, safety, connection, autonomy, homeliness and meaning. Guided by this vision, NU is designing a living environment for 28 adults with disabilities for Emiliani vzw. The aim is to create a place that responds in the most natural way to each person’s unique needs and desires. In these homes, which the residents can proudly call their own, they each find a place tailored to their mood, character and the time of day.
By situating the communal spaces close to the street and the public gardens, Vandenbussche and NU are building a welcoming architecture that opens itself to the village of Zaffelare and its inhabitants. An architecture that encourages interaction between the residents and the village, and between the residents themselves.
The thorough renovation of the doctor’s villa will be wind- and watertight by the end of this year. Finishing work has already started on the new-build home in the forest garden. In the summer of 2026, both buildings will be ready to welcome their new residents.
