Design for a new Jessa Hospital in Hasselt
The design proposal starts from a sustainable organisation of the site. It combines long-term flexibility with a strong spatial structure in which different developments can be anchored. The programme is structured into three clearly readable entities: the care building, the logistics and parking complex and the supplementary services. These entities are connected by a linear circulation route for people and logistics. The structuring connection also forms the boundary between the urban and rural parts of the campus.
The project proposal focuses on the greatest possible separation of logistical flows and functions, both at masterplan level and at building level. At masterplan level, the reception of motorised traffic is located at the edge of the site. Smooth and efficient traffic flow ensures optimal internal circulation, which is also surrounded by a pleasant green park environment.
The hospital’s programmatic backbone is formed by three parallel bands that cut through the plinth volume in both plan and in section. With care for orientation, the building is clearly structured into a circulation belt, a support belt and a service belt. The circulation belt is strategically located on the park side and brings the green experience deep into the building. The support band consists of support functions that act as a filter between the circulation and the services.
The rational building geometry allows the programme to be efficiently divided into three compact specialised zones. The ambulatory zone in the southern part of the building is strongly oriented towards the central square. The hot floor is located centrally and the mother and child zone is organised in the north.
The proposed concept maximises the functional and experiential quality for all user groups. The outdoor space brings out the landscape potential of the site and makes it available in a generous and highly accessible way for the direct users of the hospital as well as the other functions on the site and the wider environment. The medical-technical care activity is housed in a highly efficient building with a great deal of attention to functionality and a high experiential value. The accommodation for patients and visitors provides as much contact as possible with the outside.
